A Brief History of Australia | Mavimore

According to official records, the first European to see the Australian mainland was Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon. Janszoon saw Cape York Peninsula in 1606. During the 17th century, the Dutch mapped the entire western and northern coastline and called it New Holland. However, they did not make any effort to establish any settlements. In 1770, James Cook traveled along the eastern coast of Australia, mapped the region, and declared that the region he called New South Wales was annexed to British territory. The discoveries made as a result of the expeditions quickly enabled the establishment of colonies where prisoners and detainees were employed as workers for the exploitation of the continent. Many legal connections between Australia, which was a British colony for many years, and the United Kingdom officially ended in 1942, when Australia adopted the Westminster Act of 1931. The last legal link between Australia and the United Kingdom ended with the Australia Act 1986. Mavimore Turizm is a travel agency registered with TÜRSAB. Document number: A-8307
