Since the 10th century, German lands, which were an important component of the Holy Roman Empire, were governed as independent kingdoms. In the 16th century, the northern kingdoms became the center of the Reformation, a process in which the Christian church split into sects. With the rise of the Pan-Germanism movement and intense nationalist feelings dominating the masses, in 1871, under the leadership of the Kingdom of Prussia in the north, Germany achieved national unity and established the German Empire. Germany, one of the important powers of both world wars, was divided into two: East and West after the Second World War.
