Spread over a very large area, Mongolia is generally divided into five regions. Each region is divided into different municipalities. Central Mongolia includes the country’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, and its most touristic region, Arkhangai. Gobi, known as the desert region, falls on the southern side of the country. The Western Mongolia region is surrounded by Uvs Nuur Lake and Tavan Bogd Mountains. Other regions of the country are Northern Mongolia and Eastern Mongolia. Erdenet, the second largest city of Mongolia, came to the fore with carpet and copper mining. Other important cities of the country are the historical city Hovd, where the traditions of Mongolian and Kazakh culture are most widely maintained, and the ancient Mongolian city Karakorum.
