Krakow Travel Guide: Places to Visit and See in Krakow | Mavimore

After the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps, I took a tour around the city square in the evening. Kraków has the largest square in Europe; Rynek Główny . This is the Old Town area of the city; It is an ideal place to sit, watch the flow of the city, street artists and listen to pleasant music, with colorful, old architecturally diverse houses and historical buildings. The building seen on the left is Cloth Hall, one of the oldest shopping malls. There are places where you can buy many things such as souvenirs, silver workmanship and handicrafts. The tower visible behind me, right in the middle of the Main Market Hall, is the Town Hall Tower, built in the 13th century and 70 meters tall. From here we set out to go to Wawel Castle. Wawel Castle is a magnificent castle located on the banks of the Wisla River. This Gothic style castle also has a cathedral, and entrance to the cathedral is free. One of the structures that caught my attention the most in Wawel Castle is the Sigismund Bells inside. You need to buy a ticket to visit the bells, cathedral museum and tombs. Detailed information is here: http://www.katedra-wawelska.pl/english/tourist_information,26.html. In the 1600s, King Sigismund moved the capital from Krakow to Warsaw, but this castle never lost its importance. Above are images of me climbing the narrow stairs to climb the Bells of Sigismund. At the end there is the biggest bell (this bell used to be rung during coronations) and a wonderful view. From here we start to tour the inside of the cathedral, which contains the tombs of Polish Kings, Polish Saints and other notables. There are magnificent chapels dedicated to the Saint in the cathedral. We move on to the section where the tombs are located on the lower floor. At the entrance of the cathedral is the tomb of Queen Jadwiga and the head of St. Stanislaus is kept in a silver chest. There is a grave of President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria in the basement of the building next to the cathedral, and Piłsudski’s grave is in the upper part. The most famous symbol of Krakow and Wawel are dragons. Of course it has a story. There are several stories, but the most famous one is this: A long time ago, a terrible dragon lived in the cave here. This dragon especially ate young women. The king wanted to put an end to this, but all of his brave knights fell into the fiery breath of the dragon. All the young girls in the city, except the king’s only daughter, were sacrificed, and the king promised to marry his daughter to whoever could protect and save his daughter from the dragon. Great warriors fought for the prize and all lost. One day, a poor shoemaker’s apprentice named Skuba (also called Krak, there are even people who say that the name Krakow comes from here) accepted the challenge. He puts sulfur gas in a lamp and leaves it in front of the dragon’s cave. The dragon that eats it and is incredibly thirsty returns to the Vistula River and drinks more and more. However, the dragon, unable to relieve the burning in his stomach due to sulfur, drinks half of the river and his fire goes out and he explodes. Skuba (Krak) marries the girl and they live happily. The dragon statue made by Polish artist Bronisław Chromy attracts everyone’s attention by occasionally breathing fire from its mouth. We left Wawel and after having our dinner, while wandering around the city square, we saw Harris Piano Jazz Bar and couldn’t resist going in. After buying our beers, we found 2 chairs in the full place to listen to the live music and sat down immediately 🙂 We ended the day with good music to relieve the tiredness of the day and returned to our hostel. The next day, we bought a few souvenirs, walked around the Old Town again, and then preparations for our return began. The song I remember from Harris Piano Jazz Bar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjNX_gayY1E Mavimore Turizm is a travel agency registered with TÜRSAB. Document number: A-8307
