The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. But only about half of the population speaks this language. Unofficial indigenous languages are mostly spoken in the country. There are approximately 40 different indigenous languages and dialects in the country. The other most spoken languages in Mozambique, where all local languages come from the Bantu language family, are Makuan, Tsongo, Chilomwe and Sena. In rural areas of the country, where the number of people who speak English increases as you go north, the number of people who speak Portuguese is quite low, in fact it is almost not spoken at all.
