Panajachel Travel Guide: Destination Solola, Panajachel | Mavimore

We leave Guatemala City early in the morning. Today the destination is Solola… What makes the city of Solola, which is also the center of the Solola region, so popular is that it overlooks Lake Atitlan. Before reaching Solola, we take a break at a very colorful restaurant on the road. This restaurant, whose roof is completely covered with dried leaves, is actually the front of a farmhouse. Because milk, dairy products and corn are produced at the back of the restaurant. Actually, this restaurant was going to be our stopover on the road. However, when I saw the bread made fresh from black corn flour here, my ideas changed. Immediately, we were ordered some soup and this bread on the side. I couldn’t see much difference in taste between it and other corn flour breads. But my father decided to buy the seeds of these black corns. He had previously grown the seeds he bought from Peru in Sinop. The plant grew, in fact it grew a lot bigger. But it did not produce any fruit. Therefore, my father determinedly started looking for black corn seeds. Solola is perfect for this anyway. We soon entered Solola and the first thing we saw was a local market. Located at an altitude of 2,114 meters above sea level and overlooking Lake Atitlan, Solola’s market has taken its place among the highest markets. I’ve talked about the market this much, but don’t get your expectations too high. It’s not a very big market. But this market is very important for the settlements around Lake Atitlan. Solola’s name comes from the Mayan word T’zolojy’a. The people living in Solola are descended from the Kaqchikel Maya, a branch of the Maya. Another dominant Mayan branch is the K’iche’ Mayans. These people, who come from Mayan origins, still continue to wear their traditional clothes. The central population of Solola is 14,000 people. But the Municipality of Solola also looks after the settlements of Los Encuentros, El Tablón, San Jorge la Laguna and Argueta, as well as 59 other smaller settlements. One of the most striking buildings in the center of Solola; The structure dating from the Spanish period, called the Central American Tower. There is the town hall behind it. Directly opposite this tower is the church. One of the most important features of this church is that there are stained glass windows with bat figures on the windows, and they placed the stained glass windows so beautifully that when the sun rises and the light enters through the window, the shadows of the bat figures in the stained glass form towards the ceiling of the church. As the sun sets, the light hitting the interior creates the impression that the bat shadows are coming out of the church. It was very interesting. Another point worth seeing in Solola is the cemetery. This cemetery was one of the most interesting and colorful cemeteries I have ever seen in my life. Some rich families had separate family mausoleums built for themselves. Some cemeteries are well-kept but small. These graves also belong to low-income segments. The entire cemetery has a view of Lake Atitlan… Then we left here and headed towards the town of Panajachel on the edge of Lake Atitlan. After Panajachel, we will take a boat tour on Lake Atitlan.
