We went on our Riga trip, which would last 4 full days, in mid-August. After the hot weather of Istanbul, a slightly cool weather welcomed us at the airport. It takes approximately 3 hours to reach with THY’s direct flights. After coming to the city from the airport and settling into our hotel, we immediately started our city tour. Riga was built on the banks of the Daugava River; The Pilsates Canal, which is very well-kept and looks like a park on all sides, passes through it. Benches and social areas have been created around this canal, which will not disrupt the environment too much, and there are also small boats making Daugava River tours, where this canal is the starting point. When talking about a river, do not think of a small place; it is a stream that flows into the Baltic Sea, where huge passenger and commercial ships come and go. There are many historical buildings in Riga’s old city center and they are all well-maintained. It takes half a day to visit the old city on foot, and if you take an additional tour with city tour buses, which take about two hours, you can get a good idea about the city. There are enough restaurants and hotels in the Old City, people are very civilized and respectful, but they seem a little cold. The currency they use is Lat, it is even more valuable than the Euro. If you compare the prices with our country, the prices are about 40% more expensive. The city is like a giant park, its historical places are worth seeing, if I were to summarize; Latvian Freedom Monument, Pilsates Canal surroundings, Three Brothers Houses, Riga Dome Cathedral, Riga Livu Square and Cat House, Riga Blackheads Building and many other historical buildings and churches are truly magnificent. We devoted two full days to Riga and its immediate surroundings. First, we traveled 25 km from Riga. We went to Jurmala, which is far away. Jurmala holiday resort, located on the Baltic Sea coast of Latvia, is a very beautiful place with white beaches and lush forests. It was a summer resort preferred not only by Latvians but also by Russians, and even Russian Republic music competitions were held here. Jurmala is very clean and well-kept; It is a wonderful holiday destination with hotels, restaurants, summer houses and white sands. The doner restaurant opened by a Turk of German origin at the entrance to the big beach also caught our attention. Döner kebab can now be seen almost all over the world. Our second stop is the city of Sigulda, approximately 50 km away from the capital Riga, after passing through lush green roads and forests. It is a very small city, its population is approximately 17 thousand. In Sigulda, located in the Gauja National Park region; Sigulda Castle, Gauja National Park, Gutman Cave, Turaida Castle and museum are places to visit. Cruising over the national park by cable car can also be considered among the must-do activities. Another stop of our trip was the town of Kuldiga, located approximately 150 km away from Riga. The town was founded in the 1240s, and although it was invaded from time to time, it preserved its historical texture. A cute Central European town with narrow streets, old historical buildings, wooden houses, churches and synagogues. Its population was approximately 14 thousand people. It is a quiet town, with the Venta River passing through it; They created a very beautiful waterfall, it was the widest waterfall in Europe, and they built a big bridge over it. A beautiful travel area for tourists and locals. They call the bridge over the Venta River “Brick Bridge”. The bridge, which is 500 meters long and 26 meters wide, has been restored from time to time. We had the opportunity to see many different riches such as toy museums, castles and castles on the side of the road during these 2-day tours, including the center of Riga.
