The Romanian economy was based on agriculture until the 1990s. The planned economy, especially during the communist regime between 1947 and 1989, started to turn into a market economy with the economic collapse in 1990 and the collapse of the communist regime. After this date, the Romanian economy gained rapid momentum and opened up to the foreign market and started to trade with countries such as France, Italy and Spain. The country, where this situation contributes to the development of the country’s economy, has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007. One of the main problems of Romania, which is trying to reduce the unemployment rate, is the gypsy population without an identity card.
