Rome Travel Guide: Journey to Freedom in Europe | Mavimore

A trip that my sister and I dreamed of; 14 countries, 18 cities in 18 days… We applied for this project with the money we saved, and we prepared with the happiness of both of us being accepted. I found EYOBUS completely by coincidence. We returned from this beautiful journey, which we started as 2 brothers, with 45 friends. Before starting the project, they helped us warm up to each other with a few hours of orientation in Istanbul. Turkey’s last point in the west; We enter Greece from the İpsala border gate. From the very first moment, the Greek alphabet on the signs says that you are no longer in your homeland. We start our first explorations with the cookies we bought from Kavala in the morning. When local people understand that we speak Turkish and speak a few words of Turkish to us, the smiles on our faces grow even bigger. From Kavala we move on to Thessaloniki, which is undoubtedly the most meaningful place of our journey. Seeing the house where the great leader Mustafa Kemal was born and raised activates the feeling of pride within us. As we walk through the streets of Thessaloniki, smelling of olive oil and thyme, which are reminiscent of our culture, we think that Ataturk may have passed through the same path. Talking about the similarities between Thessaloniki and Foça with my sister, we go to the White Tower, which was built during the Ottoman period… We send greetings to the Aegean coast from here. Leaving the lights of the city behind, our bus passes to Igoumenitsa and boards a ship heading towards Bari. We are on a cruise of approximately 13 hours in the waters of the Mediterranean with people from all over the world. We arrive in Rome around 16:00 in the afternoon. We go to our pre-arranged 4-star hotel for the first stay of our trip. After taking a shower and resting, we start visiting Rome with the heat of July and the evening wind. The Colosseum looks even more gigantic to our eyes with the lighting in the evenings. Encountering a different historical structure with every step we take, we arrive at the Trevi Fountain, which we know as the Fountain of Love. Meeting another Turkish group when we arrived there shows us how small the world is. We take the fountain behind us and throw the 50 cent coins with which we have attached our wishes, over our shoulders, into the water, as is the tradition. After drinking a beer and resting at the Spanish Steps, the last stop of the evening, we head back towards the hotel where we will be staying. The next morning, after a nice breakfast, we continue touring Rome where we left off. Our first stop is Piazza Navona, that is, Navona Square. This square, decorated with obelisks brought from Egypt, hosts many artists. The area around the square is full of cafes, and since the coffee culture is widespread, coffee consumption is also high in this country. Painters show off their skills in the middle of the square. They make paintings on the one hand and sell them on the other. We also have our caricature drawn. Accompanied by the music of a group of young people… We also taste Italian pasta near Navona Square. From here we move on to the Vatican, the smallest and richest country in the world. The state borders separating Italy and the Vatican are only iron bars 1 meter above the ground. We took lots of photos in St. Peter’s Square. The warning that short skirts and shorts cannot be entered into the cathedral draws our attention. There is dim lighting inside, as in all churches, and there are many Christian statues, including Michelangelo’s famous Mercy Statue. We leave the Vatican and go to Florence, the city that best preserves the traces of the Renaissance. We buy lots of souvenirs from this city with its market culture. From here we go to Venice, known as the City of Lovers. We reach the city by train. As soon as we leave the station, we are fascinated by this beautiful city built on 118 islands. Since none of the public transportation we are used to is used here, we take sea buses like everyone else. Tickets, which are quite expensive for tourists, are very affordable for locals. As we head towards the city’s largest square, we take advantage of the abundance of souvenir shops and buy 2 masks. When we reach St. Mark’s Square, it is getting dark. As our clocks show midnight, we leave the city by train the same way we arrived. Our journey to Italy ends here. Mavimore Turizm is a travel agency registered with TÜRSAB. Document number: A-8307
