I came to Sarajevo with Turkish Airlines on July 27, 2014. The journey was not bad, but when you entered the Bosnian border, there was slight turbulence and it was normal. There is nothing to worry about. The airport is quite small. In fact, there was only one luggage carousel available. The city is pretty easy. There is no way you can get lost. There is only one street and as long as you follow the river you reach Bascarsija. There is the historical “Sebil” at the starting point of Bascarsija. When you continue from there, you will see all the important historical artifacts. Next to Bascarsija is Ferhadiye Street. But you can only distinguish the difference between these two streets from the stones on the ground. Bascarsija is a very touristic place. There are souvenir shops left and right and lots of food alternatives. When you start from Bascarsija and complete Ferhadiye Street, you reach the eternal fire “eternal flame”, built in memory of those who died in the war. At this point you will see a hotel entrance; “Hotel Hecca”. Be sure to go to the hotel cafe, order Turkish coffee and Turkish delight for yourself and take panoramic photographs of the whole city. When you leave the Eternal Flame Monument behind and continue on the main street, you will come across the buildings built later in the city. The ones you will notice best among these are; shopping malls and business center towers, including Al-Jazeera. There is nothing very different in shopping malls, they are the world brands we know. For women, I just have to point out this; We have “Watsons” or “Gratis”, there is a German chain called “DM” and it can be bought if you are not too lazy to carry cheap cosmetics and daily care. Most of the museums are closed for renovations. There was one open; “Historijski Museum”, I recommend. They exhibit the tragedy that took place in Bosnia with photographs and items from that day. There are many churches and also mosques in Bosnia. It is not possible to visit all of them, but the main ones stand out. If you can find the opportunity to walk by the river, it would be nice to photograph the city’s silhouette. The “City Hall” or the old library building on this road will definitely attract your attention. I heard an interesting story about this and I want to share it. Long ago, there was a house on the site of this “City Hall” building. But the state decided to build a city hall here and state officials came to this house and wanted to buy the man’s house, but the man is stubborn and will definitely not sell it. “You can’t buy my house with money,” he says. Finally they asked the man “So what do you want?” saying. The man had only one condition; “It will be possible if you build the same house as mine, with perfect symmetry, on the opposite side of the river,” he said. When you go today, you will see “Inat House” right across from City Hall. This is the story… If you have the chance to spare an extra day, definitely go to Mostar and go in the morning and return in the evening; Spend a full day there. Again, if you have a plan to go from Sarajevo to Belgrade like us, here is a little tip: You can reach the bus and train terminal and find alternatives to go to both Mostar and Belgrade. It is very easy to get here; When you take Tram 1 and get off at the last stop, both terminals are at the same place. Keep in mind; – If you go this way in summer, be sure to take an umbrella, raincoat and rain-proof shoes with you. Even if it is summer, there are 4 seasons and you always keep it in your backpack with you during the day. – Drinking tea is not a very popular behavior in Bosnia. Even when you order tea, “What’s wrong? Are you sick?” You may encounter an attitude like this. However, if you really want tea in Sarajevo, you will see an inn in Bascarsija that serves tea as we understand it. – Drink beer in Bosnia, but don’t drink “Sarajevsko”. Even Bosnians don’t drink it and can’t believe how his factory is still open. – While you’re walking around Bascarsija, be sure to stop by the nut shops and taste something to your liking. -The food is cheap and the portions are large. Especially the portions of the meatballs called “toplucici” are very satisfying. It is possible to find delicious pastries and pastries in bakeries under the name “Pekara”. I suggest you also go to supermarkets. Delicious snacks can come in handy during the day. – Cigarettes are very cheap in the country, so don’t bother buying them at the freeshop. The package, which is 10 TL in Turkey, is 6 TL here. – Do not use a taxi and you don’t need it much anyway. You can walk to many places, other than that, the tram is also sufficient. It is possible to buy the ticket from kiosks or inside the tram. If you must use a taxi, make sure it has a “TA” plate. – The alphabet and writings are easy to understand, there is a strange Turkish word similarity. The letters “J” are read as “Y”. The letter “C” is written upside down : ) – There is Ziraat Bank in both Sarajevo and Mostar. In addition, it is also possible to see some Turkish stores. – If you want to take beautiful photos, I recommend going to the castle side at sunset. The view and light are magnificent. – For your information, if you went to Bosnia during the holiday period, the “Tunnel” is closed. – The bus to get to Mostar is very reasonable and cheap. The journey takes approximately 2 hours or 2.5 hours. – If you are going to Belgrade, I recommend choosing a 7-8 person shuttle instead of a bus. More comfortable and the same price. €25 per person.
